(English) Motion Picture Association (MPA)/ Japan and International Motion Picture Copyright Association (JIMCA) and Digital Hollywood University (DHU) launched the 4th MPA-DHU Film Workshop inviting John Polson, Executive Producer and Director of CBS television series Elementary as special guest November.29.2016
On October 30, 2016, Motion Picture Association (MPA)/ Japan and International Motion Picture Copyright Association (JIMCA) and Digital Hollywood University (DHU), with support from the Embassy of the United States of America and in cooperation with the 29th Tokyo International Film Festival (TIFF), launched the 4th MPA-DHU Film Workshop. John Polson, Executive Producer and Director of CBS television series Elementary, was the invited as special guest to the film workshop.
This film workshop was held to share knowledge between international speakers and Japanese filmmakers, directors and students.
Welcome remarks were delivered by the hosts, Tomoyuki Sugiyama, President of DHU; and Mike Ellis, President and Managing Director, Asia Pacific, MPA, Yasushi Shiina, Director General of TIFF and Ryan Waye, Economic Officer, Embassy of the United States of America.
John Polson was interviewed by Stephen Jenner, Vice President, Asia Pacific, MPA, on the topic of “Often times the best way to tell a story is also the least expensive way”; while Patrick Donaldson from .film delivered a lecture regarding “How using a .film domain name website promotes and protects you and your creative content online.”
Movie producer and attorney Lucas Oliver-Frost moderated a panel discussion entitled “Pitching your project to people that count” with, Director John Polson, Scriptwriter Takaya Okamoto, Producer Toshihiko Yamamoto as panellists.
For the 4th Pitching Contest, 10 finalist candidates pitched their projects individually within a 10 minute session. The five guest expert filmmakers were joined by three additional guests, Seigo Tono from the SHORTSHORTS FILM FESTIVAL Executive Committee, Mike Ellis, and Marc Fuoti, Senior Advisor of JIMCA on the judging panel. As a result, Daisuke Yamaoka was awarded first place for “Hello Baby!” and won a comprehensive five-day film immersion program. In addition to this, Mike Ellis, President and Managing Director, Asia Pacific, MPA, awarded a President’s Special Recognition Prize to Kanon Murakami, writer of Minato/ The Port. As a supplementary prize, Kanon will be invited to the prize-awarding ceremony of the Asia Pacific Screen Awards (APSAs), which is annually held during November and December in Australia.
