Do you know why we celebrate “World Intellectual Property Day”?

Every year on April 26, we commemorate the establishment of the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) and celebrate World Intellectual Property Day. WIPO takes the opportunity to conduct various activities to raise awareness about the importance of intellectual property rights, and educates people about the role that intellectual property rights play in encouraging innovation and creativity.

Innovate for a Green Future

The theme of World Intellectual Property Day in 2020 is “Innovate for a Green Future / 未来.” Leading film and television studios are focused on addressing the issue of sustainability and working towards a cleaner, healthier environment. Sustainability has become integral to the way they do business. They also recognize that working to reduce waste, conserve energy and other important measures is the right thing to do. And when they work to reduce their carbon footprint in communities where they shoot their productions, this engenders goodwill, helps set examples for the rest of the community, and raises awareness across the film and television industry and the wider community.

“World Intellectual Property Day” Special Screening

The MPA has worked with governments and the US Embassy each year to organize special movie screenings to commemorate World Intellectual Property Day. We have hosted events around the world and invited movie enthusiasts to the event to promote the importance of copyright and respect for intellectual property.

While we would have loved to continue our annual event this year, we must do our part to maintain social distancing, and ensure the health of our partners and friends above all else. For this reason we will not host a screening this year.

World Intellectual Property (IP) Day on April 26 is a day to raise public awareness about the role of IP in daily life, and to celebrate the contribution made by innovators and creators to the development of societies across the globe. It also falls on the day on which the Convention establishing World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) entered into force on April 26, 1970.

The theme for the 2020 World IP Day is “Innovate for a Green Future”. We hope you will take this opportunity to consider the role played by innovation and the intellectual property system that supports it in realizing a green future. The WIPO Japan Office also strives to promote the WIPO GREEN project to help resolve global issues and create a green future. This project was initiated by Japanese industry, with 14 Japanese companies and organizations newly registered as partners during the last six months (making a total of 21 Japanese companies and organizations – the most partners in the world). WIPO Japan Office had been planning to hold a Commemorative Symposium in April for a Nobel Laureate, business leaders, and high school students to discuss innovation and the role of intellectual property for a green future from each of their perspectives under the theme for 2020 “Innovate for a Green Future”. However, we decided to postpone due to the widespread outbreak of coronavirus. We will make another announcement once it is rescheduled. We hope that you will take the opportunity afforded by the World IP Day to reconsider the importance of respecting intellectual property. With that in place, we believe that new vaccines, medicines, and treatment methods, etc. against the new coronavirus will be invented through the dedicated contributions of the medical profession, researchers and inventors. We trust that such innovations and the intellectual property system will assist in resolving these new global issues.
